DAY 1 // The Situation

Hello all,

As you've heard, Aunt Joanne has been in the hospital today and is in VERY serious condition. She made it through, but it is not looking good. Please prepare yourself to read this, as it is very tough to read, or if you'd rather discuss it with us on the phone, please call me immediately: 503-516-2228

THE SITUATION:

She has several pelvic fractures from a fall 6 weeks ago. This was not diagnosed after seeing 2 doctors, but mom was convinced this was the case, and it was verified today. This is what has been causing her pain when walking the 6 weeks, but this is not what the seriousness is about.

Somehow in the last few days/weeks she contracted a necrotizing fasciitis bacteria, and it spread very quickly and extensively. The doctor had to cut out quite a bit of tissue. If she survives, she will require multiple plastic surgeries, and will likely never have full use of her R leg.

Now comes the really serious stuff. Due to the bacteria, her white blood cell count is at .1 This means that she has no immune system to fight this infection and support her body, and it is very likely that one or multiple organs will fail. The surgeon estimated her survival rate at 10%, with the likelihood of her making it through the night very slim.

THE HOPE:

If she can make it through the night, her chances of survival improve greatly. She is currently on a ventilator to stabilize her lungs and prevent infection, and will require more procedures and surgeries in the coming weeks.
