Hey guys,
We just heard that JoAnne's procedure got postponed to tomorrow, as other surgeries came up that had a higher priority.
We will let you know when we hear from the surgeons tomorrow about how the procedure went!
Jani saw her today with Carol, and then MaryAlice this evening. All pretty normal... still fighting a fever, but the diuretics have really done their job; JoAnne is looking much more like herself without the swelling she'd been experiencing the last few weeks.
Kelty & I went in this evening and realized how much they have been lightening JoAnne's sedation; she was much more conscious than usual, blinking and appearing to watch the news. This concerned us that she might be uncomfortable or in pain, but her nurse, Susan, is taking great care to ensure she is comfortable and pain-free. Susan she reminded us, though, that the process of decreasing sedation (and eventually pain medication) while still maintaining her BP and other stats is necessary for her recovery, but it's not an easy transition. It's been two weeks since all of this began, and as JoAnne becomes more stable and begins to improve, it is natural that they will begin to decrease sedation (unfortunately increasing her discomfort in the process). This balancing act is inevitable, and it's something that we'll all have to deal with, hoping for the best.

PS- for those of you who asked, YES, we can touch JoAnne now that she's not as immuno-compromised. We stroke her head, hold her hands and touch her leg. She tends to get a bit uncomfortable sometimes by this (her BP raises, at leaast), so we try to keep it minimal, but want her to feel some affection, too! Another balancing act, that one.
