JoAnne had a surgery today to see if they could partially close the top portion of her hip wound that has been healing so well. They were successful, as they were able to loosely suture the outside, still leaving room for packing and draining inside, with the hopes of encouraging the skin to hold together a bit and continue to heal. This was very painful for JoAnne, and it may affect her PT for a few days until she's feeling a bit better. The bottom of her wound is still open, as it needs continued air and packing from the burst cyst last week... more on that as things progress.
JoAnne has been on blood thinner medication since her first surgery was done. This is because it's fairly common for hospital patients of this duration to develop a thrombosis (i.e. a blood clot), and the thinners ensure that the blood doesn't clot, allowing for constant circulation to the heart. Due to her recent surgeries that require the blood thinners to be temporarily discontinued (so that she doesn't bleed too much when on the table), JoAnne has developed one thrombosis in her left arm, and another in her left leg. This is of course scary news, but with the resuming of the blood thinners, she should not be an immediate danger, they say. They'll continue to take JoAnne's blood pressure, encourage her to continue moving as much as possible, and finally to monitor the status of each small clot to make sure that they begin to shrink, not obstructing any blood flow needed for circulation.
JoAnne has really appreciated your calls to check in, as well as your sweet cards.... keep 'em up! This is the time when things are tough- small setbacks happen, PT is very difficult, she's needing to manage quite a bit of pain, all while staying positive and thinking "Barcelona!". Your support and love means a lot to her, and to us all. :)
