With reduced sedation, JoAnne has become more conscious! Wow, what an exciting day we've all had.
MORNING- This morning JoAnne's sedation was down to a 1, and she was responsive and more alert than she's ever been... Jani & Jan went to see her, so I don't know all of the details, but may try to fill them in later!
Nick stayed with her during the day while we gals were at Spoken For. Same goes for his observations, which I may be able to add soon!
EVENING- We (H/J/K) came in this evening with Jan & Carol to see JoAnne. Her versed sedation was off, and she was essentially fully awake! She was responding to questions with blinking, nodding and even mouthing words... for example, they asked her what her pain level was (1-10), and after considering it carefully for 10 or so seconds, she shrugged a bit and mouthed "seven?".
She smiled when Kelty and I told her about our 30th birthday in NYC, and nodded in (slightly annoyed) agreement to Jani's comment that she should probably start wearing her glasses... it was all very exciting. She asked why Jan was there (maybe realizing how serious all this has been), and Jani made sure she knew she wasn't dying, just recuperating... that seemed to make her feel better.
We'll be needing to repeat quite a bit and quite often until the amnesiac effects of the sedation wear off. Could be a week, could be a month, we're not sure. For now, we just want to make sure JoAnne knows we're there, that she's getting better, etc.
Other tidbits-
They may allow her to talk from her trach tube in the next few days, assuming her breathing remains stable! More on that as we know it.
Assuming she continues to improve in the next few days (not requiring she be hooked up to sedation anymore), she'll be moving from the ICU to the TRACU (trauma care unit). Again, more on that as we know it!
So many more tidbits, but they'll have to wait until tomorrow when my brain is working! It's felt like we were floating on air today since talking to JoAnne... feels so good.

ReplyDeleteThis is so cool! It must feel great to get to communicate even a little with her after all this time toiling and worrying. The pace of her recovery is sure to improve even more with her conscious participation. I'm so happy, and I'm so glad she (and we) have such loving family there to help her through it. xoxoxo
